Jeffrey William Strype

Honours B.A., M.A., LL.B., C.S.

Jeff has tried over 250 jury and non-jury trials in his specialized practice of personal injury and medical malpractice. He has argued cases successfully before the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Superior Court of Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Several of Jeff's cases have set precedents and resulted in changes to the law in Canada. At the Supreme Court of Canada, he successfully challenged the laws relating to the issue of uninsured coverage in the Somersall v. Friedman case.

His successful appeal in the Snushall v. Fulsang case now defines contributory negligence for the failure to use seatbelts. Because the Supreme Court of Canada denied the defendants' appeal, the Snushall decision is now part of Canada's law on the use of seatbelts.

Jeff's work on the Dusk v. Malone case resulted in a judgment for the plaintiffs that created a new law on business valuation. Along with this judgment for substantial business loss, the defendant insurer was required to pay the full amount of the judgment, which was more than the defendant's policy limits and the plaintiff's under-insured limits.

Jeff has lectured on personal injury topics to nurses across the province and at major trauma hospitals. He has also been invited to speak about his precedent-setting decision on contributory negligence in the Snushall appeal.

He is currently a member of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, the Advocates Society, the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Medico-legal Society, and the Metropolitan Toronto Lawyer's Association.
